Issues Will specializes in:
Identity Work
Trauma & Suffering
Queer
Will is influenced by Internal Family Systems (IFS); feminist, queer and postmodern theories; attachment theory; psychodynamic theory; polyvagal theory (PVT); and mindfulness practices.
During a clinical session, Will may draw in various tools and perspectives from each of these modalities. Art therapy plays well with all of these modalities, and Will likes to work with clients to explore themselves through creative expression and supportive experimentation with what is going to help you.
Feminist, Queer and Postmodern Theories
Will believes that therapy is most effective when we begin from a place of curiosity, compassion, courage, and care. His education and training is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and rooted in a person-centered, integrative approach to healing.
Will spent nearly 3 years working with folx in recovery in intensive settings prior to moving into private practice. He views himself as a collaborator and partner alongside his clients, and seeks to offer a space where exploration and healing are possible. The work you will do in therapy is often challenging and sometimes painful, and Will offers a safe, supportive environment to heal and change.
About
Will DeSmit grew up around a lot of therapists, and as a third-generation clinician, he can see the importance and benefits of being intentional with how we care for ourselves and have healthy relationships. He has always been an artist, and had been using art to process, heal and self-regulate (outside of my individual therapy) before learning about art therapy. Before becoming a therapist, Will worked as a consultant with nonprofits, primarily supporting talent and recruitment efforts.
Earlier in my career, Will worked in entertainment, supporting marketing efforts in unscripted television at Warner Brothers. In his free time, he enjoyed time spent with family and pets, outdoor activities and recreation, especially tennis, and enjoying all kinds of TV & Film.
